Lawyer killed in volley of shots
Dan HarrisonJuly 11, 2006 - 8:55AM
The son of a solicitor murdered in Melbourne's north overnight has appealed for public help to find his father's killer.
David Robinson and his teenage son Nick went to the office in Station Street, Fairfield just after 8pm and discovered a burglar who was trying to set the place on fire.
Police said Mr Robinson found the front door open and the office disturbed and full of smoke.
"He went to search the back of the premises and then to have a look around. He didn't return," said Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles of the homicide squad.
Mr Robinson's wife discovered his body in front of the Fairfield railway station, less than 100 metres away.
The pair discovered the office had been broken into, ransacked and a fire lit inside.
Mr Robinson instructed his son to stay at the office while he went for help, and was shot nearby.
A passer-by assisted Mr Robinson and phoned an ambulance, but he died at the scene.
Witnesses said several shots were fired.
Son's appeal
Tom Robinson, 20, accompanied by his mother Helen, made the appeal to reporters at the scene in Fairfield this morning.
"My father David Meredith Robinson, 56, died last night near his office in Fairfield," he said, reading from a prepared statement.
"David had practised as a solicitor in the area for 30 years and it appears he is the victim of an attack.
"David was a loving father of three sons and the family has lived in the area for many years.
"We know of no reason why anyone would want to harm him. We have given statements to the police. We would ask that anyone who knows anything to come forward.
Family 'distressed'
"We are very distressed. We request that our privacy be respected at this very difficult time."
Neither Mr Robinson nor his mother took questions from the media.
Mr Robinson's office was established in 1978 and dealt mainly in family and civil law. The offender is still on the loose and police have appealed for witnesses.
Detective Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles of the homicide squad said police would examine Mr Robinson's client records to see if they revealed any leads.
"We've just taken his wife back to the office to really look at those things, and it's probably too early to tell," Detective Senior-Sergeant Iddles told reporters at the scene.
Detectives have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Not that i afraid of death...but i refuse to die unprepared. It is kind of sad to die without knowing of any reason, at least i need to know the reason....
Alright, if in future when i really so not in luck become a lawyer and someone gonna kill me bcos of my EXPERTITY...please give me proper reason and give me some time to write down my WILL. I AM SERIOUS.
